Member of the Month

Member of the Month JR!

HUGE CONGRATS to our in house karaoke specialist/ newest member of the month.  I am not sure there is a single song that has been released on planet earth that JR doesn’t know every word to.  When I emailed JR to inform him he was our newest Member of the Month, he responded “What! really? Why?”.  WhY YoU AsK?! Because JR shows up every day, ready to work hard with the best attitude and brings the energy that everybody needs to our morning classes.  If you see JR around (probably singing) tell him congrats!

  1. How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you start?

WELL, I started crossfit regularly, I believe, in august 2020 (still a rookie). As to how I got started, it all begin 6 years ago, WOW, when a friend brought me to bring a friend day. Then for the next 5 years I would stop by with my friend on occasion to get an extra workout in here and there. I always had Tilt in the back of mind as a place I wanted to join, but didn’t see how I could make it work. Almost 2  years ago I was able to talk Reem into joining, because I had this feeling should like the community, coaches, and workouts. During COVID things changed and I was able to make the commitment. Since then, being a member of Tilt has made me feel like a younger version of myself again. I grew up training for sports everyday of my life and I had fallen out of that routine when I walked away from baseball. After a major knee surgery, I was sloppy and needed to find a way back and Tilt was the answer. The attention to fitness allowed me push myself to my limits at the time, and growing everyday to were I want to be physically as kept me coming back, well that and the QOD!!

  1. What do you do when you’re not at TILT?

When not at Tilt, I still play slow and fast pitch softball, even though my knees still scream back at me. Aside from that, I love food and live for traveling and having unique experiences. I’m a huge window shopper and take a lot of pride in editing and snapping off photos of my adventures.

  1. What is something most of TILT doesn’t know about you?

Well, I’m kind of an open book. But, here are a few..first for @bostonscopescene, when I was younger I went on a double date to New Haven for Pizza (obviously, don’t @ me). After eating a pizza and half (the guys pizza and half the ladies pizza), we walked a bit downtown. We stumbled upon a place called Ashley’s Ice Cream. This is probabaly where I should say, im pretty much down for any dare (within reason), but I never turn down a food dare. My freinds dared me to eat the Downside Watson, at the time it was a contest, 15 scoops 20 toppings – if you eat it the fastest, its free, you get a picture on the wall, and a free t-shirt (no longer a challenge and I believe a much smaller ask). Well, as I mentioned, I rarely turn down food dares so I ate it! 1 minute 59 seconds…and a new record! It held for 4 years, until a woman beat me, 1 minute 45 seconds.  DOWN GOES FRAZIER!!!

But, on a more serious note for the Tilt community, I’m an avid movie goer. The year before COVID I went to 85 movies in theaters.  Ever since I was young, going to the movies has always been an escape. The big screen, the story being told, the acting chops, the cinematography, sound mixing it’s all amazing! I normally go alone and use the time to refresh and recharge. I think it’s important that no matter what is going on you find time for yourself, to connect with yourself and going to the movies has been my place to recharge. Something Reem doesn’t even know, I started writing a screen play about my father and I during COVID. We will see what happens and if I ever finish.

  1. Have you had a favorite moment at TILT?

Damn, all the hard hitting questions, honestly I don’t think there has been a single favorite moment, it has been a process. First and foremost, Lindsay and the other coaches let me do my thing (usually sing, when I need that extra motivation, or when it just hits right) which in return has allowed me to feel more comfortable, and push me to my limits. My goal at TILT is to get my lifting weight back to 225 across the board. When I was younger 225 was nothing and I want to feel that again. Im not there yet, but everytime I have pushed for a max, I have hit a new max, and those days, those moments are my favorite.

  1.   Most importantly, now that you have the Member of the Month belt, what would your walkout song be?

Now this is more my speed, but still tough to answer….I love music from Country to EDM and Hip-Hop to Classical, pending the workout, pending my mood it all hits different. In my baseball days, my walk out music for hitting was – Ted Nugent, Stanglehold – the guitar intro gets people thinking, then when the drums come in (usally when im about to enter the box) they know its game time! But when it comes to lifting/working out I have to go with Kanye Ft. Young Jeezy – Amazing…well because “I’m amazing, yeah I’m all that, If I ain’t on my grind, then what you call that? Victorious, yeah we warriors We make history, strive off victory…I’m amazing, born on a full moon, I was bred to get it in, no spoon

What to Expect: Healthy May

Ok so you commented on my FaceBook video (maybe just cuz you saw other people doing it and you thought oh heck i’ll comment on whatever trendy post this is too) and you’re not so sure what you just agreed to do … let me help you understand.  So, this May is looking like its shaping up to be a bit different than last year (thank GAWD) and instead of spending our days making enough Banana bread each day to feed the entire metro west for a week and a half, we are finding some normalcy in social events again (like my bday bash if you attended). But this means we are actually leaving our house. Maybe you’re even headed back into the office soon and the shock of having to wear something other than your TILT sweatpants has you feeling like you’re dressing for a gosh darn MET Gala.  So lets get in met gala shape shall we?!

So here is what you agreed to… LITERALLY ANYTHING HEALTHY… Guys… this is up to YOU or HECK if you need to be told what to do I can do that for YOU!

-800 Grams of fruits and Veggies a day
-More H2O
-Less Sugar
-More whole foods
-No Take-Out
– SO MUCH MORE!

Am I going to bully you more than Braatz bullies people into perfect parking just to be healthy with me for a month? Yes.
Will you maybe not like me for a hot sec? YES maybe longer who knows.
Will you thank me later when you feel so amazing that you could run a half marathon with no training on brand new running shoes (too soon)? No you’ll pretend I had nothing to do with it.

I am not asking you to chew on raw beets or broccoli for a month or to quit sugar cold turkey and send yourself into a spiral of detox emotions while you chew on a raw carrot pretending it’s a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Tonight Dough.  Let’s just make one small sustainable step towards better health. Together.

“Oh BuT A MoNtH LoNg CoMmItMeNt iS A lOt aNd I aM AfRaId oF CoMmItMeNt” … You’re afraid of commitment?! you’re an adult, and I am not asking you to marry me (otherwise your fears would be valid) i’m literally asking (begging) you to eat vegetables. Not only will we be Met Gala ready, but maybe you’ll be pulling a few less pounds on Memorial day Murph. Who knows? (Well you will know if you join me)

JOIN ME, because we always do amazing things as a group. and because i’ll last about 2 days if someone isn’t doing it with me (or reference, i tried going caffeine free for a week for $20 and lasted 3 hours) So if you aren’t doing this for you (which you should be), do it for me.

Linda’s BIRTHDAY PARTAY

WHEN: Saturday April 24th @ 5 PM
WHERE: TILT Waltham Parking Lot
WHY: There are such thing as dumb questions (pls refer to photo above… context clues my guy)

Am I to old to be doing this? yeah i am for sure.  But here we are, it’s  April, and we know what that means…. if you don’t know what that means YOU WILL NOW.  It’s my birthday month.  And i would love nothing more than to hang out with my favorite people.  I am humbly asking (begging) that you come hang out with me to just vibe and have a good time.

I have to tell you now, I WILL be checking people into this event.  And if you do not attend, you can wave goodbye to your spot you worked so hard for on the Committed Club.  Will i take it personal? Yeah of course, I will consider it a personal attack to my character and assume we have beef that i know nothing about.  Show up for 5 min or 5 hours.  But don’t expect me to be out past 8 pm.

Anyway, congrats if you have made it this far through my dissertation. What you’re gathering now, is that you should expect to be thrown into the most subpar birthday experience you’ve ever been invited too.  WORTH NOTING, I have less than a month to practice my surprised face.  And believe me, you’re gonna want to give me a gosh darn OSCAR for my performance as I arrive to the surprise party I organized and set up all by myself.  We are talking SERIOUS SURPRISE. Think surprise level approaching those instagram influencers with their gender reveals acting as though they had NO CLUE they are having a boy or girl or whatever when they had basically a 50/50 shot at guessing boy vs girl correctly.  Anyway i’ll act surprised.

In conclusion please join me, on April 24th, for one of the most run-of-the-mill parties you will ever attend.  But remember it’s a SURPRISE.

WHAT TO EXPECT
-A good time had by all
-Food and drinks
-An Oscar worthy surprise face when i walk into the party i planned by myself for myself
-Fun and games
-Maybe a pogo stick competition i dunno

WHAT NOT TO EXPECT
-The party to continue past 9 pm
– Any of the food at the party to be paleo

*In all seriousness I would love to use my birthday as an excuse for everyone to hang out outside. You literally don’t even have to like me to attend.

xoxo Linds

Member of the Month Bior

HERE WE GO AGAIN! It’s Time for our newest Member of the Month.  This month the honor goes to one of our 5:30 am faithfuls Bior!  Bior can be found at our early morning classes just about every day.  Her commitment and hard work was made clear when she made our Committed Club in her first month at TILT.  We are super proud of you and happy you’re a part of the TILT family!

Here are Bior’s answers to our Member of the Month questions:

1.     How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you start?

I joined TILT on December 19, 2020, and it was my first experience with CrossFit!  I was going to write something about how I wanted to make a positive change to my mindset on fitness since I retired from wrestling  (many, many, some of you are younger than, years ago) but here is Lauren to help me give you the most honest version of me starting out at TILT!

Hell no to hell yes! (By Lauren Tracy)

Bior and I are neighbors in Roxbury and our dogs are BFFs so we spend lots of time chatting while our dogs play.
This past fall, Bior mentioned she was looking for a consistent workout routine so I told her about Tilt and invited her to a 5:30 morning class. Bior’s response was basically “thanks, but no thanks”.  Actually, she used many more expletives than that, but I’m not sure what I can write here, so you get a general idea. She flat out laughed at the idea of ever getting up at 4:00 something in the morning (She said “I am 100%, not a morning person, and I honestly don’t believe in the 4:00 am hour”) or EVER doing CrossFit, because of wrestling.  I didn’t push it, but I also shared that I found Tilt’s programming unique and that I thought the gym really shined at general conditioning for all athletes.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I find out that Bior’s been “practicing” getting up at 4:45am. That’s when I realized she may be more interested in coming along than she originally let on. I suggested we start by going to a 8:00am Saturday class to ease our way into it, and we did and it was great. After class, I think I gave her this whole spiel about how she could start with 3x/week and work her way up, and that’s when the tables turned real quick. Bior was like “if I’m doing this, I’m DOING this”. From that day on, she’s been the one making sure we show up 5-6x each week!

2.     What do you do when you’re not at TILT?

I am the CEO of Beat the Streets New England Wrestling, a sports youth development non-profit.  I wrestled on an all boy’s team in High School and then on one of the first collegiate women’s programs before making the US Team.  I hated every minute of it, but I learned a lot about how important it is to use sports for a positive impact on young people’s lives, and how a supportive community with strong values is imperative for personal growth.  Other than that I spend time with my dog, Kingston, and my neighbors.  I also spend way too much time planning hypothetical vacations I  will never get to go on or looking up houses all over the country on Zillow that I will never buy!

3.     What is something most of TILT doesn’t know about you?

What the rest of my face actually looks like …… One day we will all be mask-free and it will be like meeting all of you for the first time!  Before my current role, I was an event specialist for a major international hotel chain and have planned over 650 weddings.  I still enjoy chatting about weddings if anyone ever has a question!   I love pizza, it’s a problem…

4.     Have you had a favorite moment at TILT?

Other than our morning drives and coffee with Lauren, I have so many things I want to share here already!  Having to shotgun a beer my first week….is definitely up there! Getting to see Havoc run around and say “Hi” to everyone! Laughing way too hard at Max and Lindsays “Coach Jokes” because it really reminds me of when I have to coach our kids! ( or looking up on the stairwell and seeing them do a coach dance!  If you don’t know the Martha and Eddie dynamic, you are missing out!!! It’s a morning highlight. (Along with Eddie STILL trying to claim the gift basket from the raffle)  But my absolute favorite thing is being surrounded by some of the strongest and nicest people I have ever met…..seriously the women at TILT are AMAZING! The entire community is thoughtful, genuine, and supportive!

5.    Most importantly, now that you have the Member of the Month belt, what would your walkout song be?

-Poison by Bell Biv DeVoe was a solid ” go-to” when I competed!
My current one is! – Boss B*** by Doja Cat

Outdoor Class Overflow Option

With the early morning and weekend classes in Waltham at full capacity, we are excited to begin offering an “Outdoor Overflow” option. On TRIIB, you will notice the addition of a few classes called “Outdoor Overflow” at 530am, 630am, and all weekend classes. This option is for members that can’t get into the main class or for those that would rather workout outside. Please see all details below!

•The main class will still be taught from inside. Those signed up for the outdoor option will have to remain outside for the entire warmup and workout.
•The outdoor rig will be open to use!
•All equipment will be able to be brought outside (weather dependent).
•For all other classes you will continue to have the option to workout outside. However, just signup for the normal class slot. You will not see an overflow option as these class slots are not at full capacity.
Question we have been asked..will classes transition to outside? As of now, classes will always be taught from inside. There is still an option to workout outside as stated above. As it gets consistently nicer outside, we will keep you posted with our plan of action!

Member of the Month

Member of the Month Mary Alison

It’s that time! Our newest Member of the Month is Mary Alison! Mary Alison joined TILT in June, taking our virtual classes. Since day one, she has been a faithful member of our 7am virtual class. Her hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed! Congratulations Mary Alison!

Here are her answers to our Member of the Month Questions!

1.     How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you start?

I have been doing CF since 2015. A friend mentioned that she was “sore all the time” from her new workout routine. I was working out at the time but not feeling the benefits- I wanted in!! The next day I stepped into a CrossFit box and have been addicted ever since. The varied workouts, supportive coaches and community take fitness to the next level.

2.     What do you do when you’re not at TILT?

I am an ICU nurse at Boston Medical Center. When not working or working out, I spend time with my two sons Andrew and Will. We enjoy many different sporting activities all of which can get quite competitive!

3.     Have you had a favorite moment at TILT?

The favorite way to start the day is with fitness and my Tilt Coaches and comrades.

5.    Most importantly, now that you have the Member of the Month belt, what would your walkout song be?

Walkout song? Hmmmm. Alive by Pearl Jam

Paleo Power Meals is now offering meal delivery service to TILT. We're also going to stock our fridge with a few Grab-N-Go meals for you to try.
